Banff National Park Wildlife

Which option is better for wildlife viewing?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Which option is better for wildlife viewing?

For wildlife viewing, the open-air chairlift is generally the better option at the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola. With no cabin walls or windows, you have a clearer, wider view of the slopes, forest edges, and openings below the lift.

This is especially useful when looking for grizzly bears, which are occasionally seen in the Lake Louise Ski Resort area. From the chairlift, you can scan the terrain directly beneath and around you without reflections or glare from gondola windows. You may also spot black bears, deer, ground squirrels, marmots, and birds, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

The chairlift is also preferable for wildlife photography. There is no glass between your camera and the animal, which eliminates window reflections and makes it easier to capture clearer photographs. A moderate telephoto lens can be particularly useful because animals may be some distance from the lift.

The enclosed gondola can still be excellent for wildlife viewing, especially when animals happen to be close to the lift corridor. It also has the advantage of providing a more stable, protected environment when the weather is cold, windy, or wet.

Wildlife viewing can vary considerably from one ride to another. An animal visible during your ascent may have disappeared by the time you descend, so it is worth watching the slopes carefully throughout the entire ride rather than focusing only on the distant mountain scenery.

If both lifts are operating and wildlife is a priority, I would choose the open-air chairlift for at least one direction. Taking the chairlift one way and the enclosed gondola the other gives you two opportunities to scan the mountain while also experiencing both types of lift.
