What should I wear?

For a summer visit to Sunshine Village and Sunshine Meadows, dress for cooler, windier mountain conditions, even when Banff is warm. The gondola takes you to a much higher elevation, and the Standish Chairlift brings you above 2,300 metres, where temperatures can feel considerably colder.

Wear comfortable layers that you can add or remove throughout the day. A T-shirt or lightweight base layer, fleece or sweater, and a light waterproof or wind-resistant jacket work well. Weather can change quickly, with sunshine giving way to wind, rain, or even occasional summer snow at higher elevations.

Choose comfortable walking or hiking shoes with good traction. Sunshine Meadows has maintained trails, but sections can be rocky, uneven, muddy, or wet after rain. Hiking boots are useful for longer walks, although sturdy trail shoes are generally sufficient for casual sightseeing.

Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The high elevation means stronger ultraviolet exposure, and you can burn surprisingly quickly even when the air feels cool. A small backpack is useful for carrying an extra layer, water, snacks, and rain protection.

If you plan to ride the Standish Chairlift, having a warmer layer is especially worthwhile. The open chairlift can feel chilly when the wind picks up, and the Standish Viewing Deck is exposed to mountain weather.

The key is to dress for the summit rather than for Banff town. On a warm summer afternoon, you may be comfortable in a T-shirt at the base but want a fleece and jacket once you reach Sunshine Meadows and Standish.
