What is the difference between the gondola and the chairlift?

The main difference between the Lake Louise gondola and open-air chairlift is how exposed you are to the mountain environment. Both are part of the summer sightseeing experience and travel up the slopes of Whitehorn Mountain, but they feel quite different.

The gondola is an enclosed cabin, providing protection from wind, rain, and cooler temperatures. It generally feels more secure for visitors who are uncomfortable with heights and is often the better choice for families with young children or anyone who prefers a sheltered ride. Large windows still provide excellent views during the ascent and descent.

The open-air chairlift has no enclosed cabin, so you are completely exposed to the mountain air. This makes the ride feel more adventurous and immersive. You can look directly down at the slopes and surrounding terrain without viewing everything through a window.

For photography and wildlife watching, the chairlift can be especially appealing. With no glass between you and the landscape, it's easier to observe and photograph the mountains, forests, and slopes. The Lake Louise Ski Resort area is important wildlife habitat, so there is always the possibility of spotting animals during the ride, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Weather makes a major difference. On a warm, calm, sunny day, the open chairlift can be the more memorable experience. On a cold, windy, or rainy day, the enclosed gondola is usually much more comfortable.

If both lifts are operating, experiencing one on the way up and the other on the way down is an excellent option.
