What happens if it rains?

A little rain does not necessarily mean the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola will close. The gondola can operate in changing mountain weather, and light rain or passing showers may simply make the experience wetter and cooler.

Because the gondola cabins are fully enclosed, you can stay protected during the ride. If the open-air chairlift is operating, however, you'll be exposed to the rain, so the enclosed gondola is usually the more comfortable choice on a wet day.

The biggest drawback is visibility. Low clouds, fog, or heavy rain can obscure Lake Louise, Victoria Glacier, and the surrounding mountains. On the other hand, Rocky Mountain weather can change quickly, and cloudy periods sometimes break surprisingly fast. Mist and clouds moving through the peaks can also create dramatic scenery.

Conditions at the upper mountain can be colder, windier, and wetter than at the base. A waterproof jacket, warm layer, sturdy footwear, and some protection for your camera or phone are worthwhile even when only showers are forecast.

More severe weather is different. Adverse weather can cause temporary lift closures, particularly when conditions make operating the lift unsafe. Thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and severe weather are more likely to interrupt operations than ordinary light rain.

If the forecast calls for occasional showers, I wouldn't automatically cancel a visit. If it calls for persistent low cloud and heavy rain, however, you may want to choose another day if the panoramic mountain views are your main reason for riding.
