What are the best photo spots?
Some of the best photography locations at Sunshine Village are concentrated around Standish Mountain and Sunshine Meadows, where you can combine alpine lakes, wildflowers, larches, and surrounding peaks in the same compositions.
The Standish Viewing Deck is arguably the best overall photo spot. Its elevated position gives you sweeping views across Sunshine Meadows, with Rock Isle Lake, Grizzly Lake, and Laryx Lake below and layers of Rocky Mountain peaks extending into the distance. A wide-angle lens works especially well here.
Rock Isle Lake is another essential location. From the trails and viewpoints around the lake, you can photograph the water against surrounding forest, meadows, and mountains. Calm conditions can produce attractive reflections, while nearby vegetation provides excellent foreground interest.
Laryx Lake becomes particularly photogenic in September during larch season. Golden alpine larches surrounding the lake can contrast beautifully with the water and rugged mountain backdrop. It is one of the better places at Sunshine for autumn photography.
Grizzly Lake provides a quieter, more intimate alpine-lake setting. It works especially well as part of a longer photography hike through the meadows, where you can find compositions that feel less like a developed viewpoint and more like a backcountry landscape.
The Sunshine Meadows trails themselves provide countless opportunities. During peak wildflower season, look for compositions with flowers close to the camera, rolling green meadows in the middle ground, and mountain peaks behind them. These layered compositions are one of Sunshine's photographic strengths.
The Standish Chairlift also provides unusual perspectives during the ride. Looking across the alpine terrain from an open chair gives you elevated views that are difficult to reproduce from the hiking trails. Keep your camera securely attached and avoid leaning or turning excessively while taking photographs.
For distant mountain photography, look for Mount Assiniboine from the higher Standish viewpoints on a clear day. A telephoto lens can isolate its distinctive pyramidal summit from the surrounding mountain layers.
If you only have time for three locations, prioritize Standish Viewing Deck, Rock Isle Lake, and the trail around Laryx Lake. Together, they provide the best combination of panoramic mountain scenery, alpine lakes, wildflowers or larches, and classic Sunshine Meadows landscapes.
