Is there an easy hike for beginners?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is there an easy hike for beginners?

Yes. The Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola is suitable for beginner hikers, and you don't need to undertake a long backcountry hike to experience Whitehorn Mountain.

For a beginner, the best approach is to start with the short walking and interpretive areas near the upper gondola station. These allow you to experience the mountain environment, stop at viewpoints, look for wildlife, and enjoy the scenery without committing to a strenuous hike.

If you want a more substantial trail, the Kicking Horse Pass Viewpoint route is one of the more approachable choices. It is relatively short, although it does involve a noticeable uphill climb. Beginners who are reasonably active can usually manage it by walking slowly and taking breaks.

The biggest challenge isn't necessarily distance - it's elevation and mountain terrain. You're already high on Whitehorn Mountain when you begin, so uphill sections can feel more tiring than expected. Trails may also contain loose gravel, rocks, roots, and uneven surfaces.

For your first mountain hike, wear supportive walking or hiking shoes, carry water, bring a light jacket or extra layer, and allow more time than you think you'll need. Weather can change quickly at this elevation.

Whitehorn Mountain is also grizzly bear habitat, so pay attention to signs and staff instructions. Trails can occasionally be restricted or closed because of wildlife activity.

For beginners who mainly want beautiful scenery rather than a challenging hike, the experience works particularly well: ride the gondola up, explore the easiest upper-mountain walking areas, stop at the viewpoints, and return by gondola. You can enjoy the high-mountain setting without tackling a difficult trail. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
