Is the open chairlift scary?

The Lake Louise open-air chairlift can feel a little scary if you're uncomfortable with heights, but for most visitors it is more exciting than frightening. Unlike the enclosed gondola, you are sitting outside with the mountain directly beneath you, so the sense of height is much more noticeable.

The most intimidating moments are often when the chair travels higher above the ground or crosses steeper sections of the slope. Looking straight down can make the height feel more dramatic, while looking outward toward the Bow Valley and surrounding mountains usually makes the experience feel much more relaxed.

There is also a safety bar that lowers in front of passengers, which provides additional security during the ride. Once you're seated and moving, the ride is generally smooth and relatively peaceful.

If you have a moderate fear of heights, you may still enjoy the chairlift. Sitting beside someone you're comfortable with, keeping the safety bar down, and focusing on the horizon and mountain scenery rather than looking directly below can make a considerable difference.

If you have a strong fear of heights, the enclosed gondola is likely the better choice. You still get excellent mountain views, but being inside a cabin creates a much greater sense of security and separation from the height.

For visitors who aren't particularly afraid of heights, the open chairlift is often one of the most enjoyable parts of the Lake Louise summer experience. The fresh mountain air, unobstructed scenery, and possibility of spotting wildlife below make it feel considerably more immersive than riding inside the enclosed gondola.
