Is the gondola wheelchair accessible?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is the gondola wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola can accommodate guests using wheelchairs, making the gondola portion of a summer visit accessible to many visitors with mobility limitations.

The enclosed gondola cabins allow wheelchair users to travel from the base area up to Sunshine Village without hiking. Lift staff can assist with the boarding process and provide additional time when required.

However, wheelchair accessibility becomes more limited once you reach the alpine area. Sunshine Meadows is primarily a natural hiking environment, with trails that can include gravel, uneven terrain, slopes, and other surfaces that are not suitable for conventional wheelchairs.

The Standish Chairlift should not be considered wheelchair accessible in the same way as the gondola. Boarding an open chairlift requires different mobility and transfer capabilities.

For visitors primarily interested in the gondola ride, mountain atmosphere, and accessible areas around Sunshine Village, the experience can still be worthwhile. Anyone with specific transfer, wheelchair-size, or mobility requirements should confirm the current boarding arrangements with Sunshine Village before visiting.
