Is the gondola suitable for people afraid of heights?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is the gondola suitable for people afraid of heights?

Yes. The enclosed Lake Louise gondola is generally suitable for people who are mildly or moderately afraid of heights, and it is usually a much more comfortable choice than the open-air chairlift.

Because you are inside an enclosed cabin, there is a physical barrier between you and the mountain below. The cabin provides a greater sense of security, and you can choose where to focus your attention rather than having to look directly down at the slopes.

There are still sections where the gondola travels well above the ground, so someone with a severe fear of heights may find parts of the ride uncomfortable. The sensation can also become more noticeable when passing lift towers or looking straight down through the windows.

If heights make you nervous, try sitting or standing where you can look outward toward the horizon and surrounding mountains rather than directly beneath the gondola. The broad views across the Bow Valley often feel less intimidating than looking down at the terrain.

The ride is also relatively smooth and gradual, which helps. You aren't suddenly taken to a high viewpoint; instead, the elevation increases progressively as you travel up Whitehorn Mountain.

For someone deciding between the two options, the choice is straightforward: take the enclosed gondola rather than the open chairlift. You'll still experience the mountain scenery and elevated views while feeling considerably more protected from the exposure. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
