Is the chairlift scary?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is the chairlift scary?

The Standish Chairlift can feel a little intimidating if you are afraid of heights, but most visitors find it comfortable once they are on the chair and moving. It is an open-air lift, so there is nothing enclosing you, and you will be able to look directly down at the alpine terrain below.

The sensation is quite different from the enclosed Sunshine Village Gondola. You are more exposed to the height, wind, and surrounding landscape. For some people, that makes the ride exciting and scenic; for others, particularly those with a strong fear of heights, it can feel uncomfortable.

The chairlift travels at a relatively relaxed pace, giving you time to enjoy the scenery rather than creating the sensation of a thrill ride. The height above the ground varies along the route, and the openness can make some sections feel higher than they actually are.

If you are mildly nervous about heights, sitting back, keeping your safety bar down, and looking toward the mountains rather than directly beneath the chair can make the ride much easier. Sitting with someone you are comfortable with can also help.

If you have a severe fear of heights, the Standish Chairlift may not be enjoyable. You can still ride the enclosed gondola to Sunshine Village and experience the alpine setting without taking the open chairlift. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
