Is summer the best season?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is summer the best season?

Yes. Summer is generally the best season to visit Sunshine Village and Sunshine Meadows for sightseeing and hiking. This is when the sightseeing gondola and Standish Chairlift provide convenient access to the high-alpine landscape and the main trail network is most accessible.

July and August are the prime months. Trails are generally in their best condition, days are longer, temperatures are warmer, and the meadows become green and colourful. From roughly mid-July through mid-August, alpine wildflowers are one of the major attractions.

Summer is also the best time for exploring Rock Isle Lake, Grizzly Lake, and Laryx Lake. You can ride the Standish Chairlift to the upper viewpoint and then hike down through Sunshine Meadows, or start hiking directly from Sunshine Village.

August is particularly good for first-time visitors. Snow has usually disappeared from most established hiking routes, wildflowers may still be present, and conditions are generally more comfortable for spending several hours outdoors.

September has its own advantage: larch season. If golden alpine larches are your priority, a September visit can actually be more spectacular than midsummer. However, temperatures are colder, snow becomes more likely, and the summer sightseeing season is approaching its end.

For the classic Sunshine Meadows experience-gondola, Standish Chairlift, alpine lakes, wildflowers, hiking, and mountain views-late July through mid-August is difficult to beat. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
