Is it safe for children?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is it safe for children?

Yes. The Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola is generally a safe and family-friendly experience for children. Families regularly use the lift to access the upper slopes of Whitehorn Mountain without needing to undertake a strenuous hike.

For families with younger children, the enclosed gondola is usually the easiest option. Children remain inside a cabin throughout the ride, providing more protection from heights, wind, rain, and cooler mountain temperatures. Parents may also find it more comfortable than managing small children on an open chairlift.

The open-air chairlift can also accommodate children, subject to the resort's current loading and safety requirements. Because it is exposed, children need to remain properly seated and follow the lift attendant's instructions throughout the ride. If a child is nervous about heights or has difficulty sitting still, the enclosed gondola is the better choice.

The upper mountain requires normal outdoor precautions. Keep children close, stay on designated paths, supervise them around steep or uneven terrain, and never approach wildlife. The Lake Louise area is bear habitat, so any wildlife should be observed from a safe distance.

Mountain weather is another consideration. Even on a warm summer day, conditions higher on Whitehorn Mountain can be cooler, windier, and change quickly. Bringing an extra layer and rain protection for children is a good idea.

Overall, the enclosed gondola is the best choice for most families with young children, while older children who are comfortable with heights may find the open chairlift one of the most exciting parts of the experience. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
