Is it safe?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is it safe?

Yes. The Standish Chairlift is designed and operated as a passenger sightseeing lift, and for most visitors it is a safe experience when they follow the loading, riding, and unloading instructions.

The open-air design can make the chairlift feel more exposed than it actually is, particularly if you are uncomfortable with heights. Once seated, keep the safety bar in the instructed position, remain seated throughout the ride, and avoid leaning or turning around excessively.

Staff supervise the loading and unloading areas and can provide instructions if you are unfamiliar with chairlifts. Take your time when boarding and exiting, and tell an attendant if you are nervous or need assistance.

Weather is another important consideration. Because Standish is high and exposed, strong winds, thunderstorms, or other unsuitable conditions can cause the chairlift to be temporarily suspended or closed. These operational decisions are made for safety.

For most visitors-including people who have never ridden a chairlift before-the Standish Chairlift should feel straightforward. Feeling nervous because of the height does not necessarily mean the ride is unsafe; the open design simply makes you much more aware of the elevation and terrain below.
