Is it good for young children?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is it good for young children?

Yes. Sunshine Village can be a very good summer experience for young children, especially because families can reach the alpine environment by gondola instead of having to hike up the mountain.

The enclosed Sunshine Village Gondola is generally the easiest part of the experience for younger children. They can sit inside the cabin with their family and watch the mountains, forests, and ski terrain pass below. Once at Sunshine Village, families can keep the visit relatively short or choose easy walks rather than committing to a long hike.

The Standish Chairlift requires more consideration with very young children because it is open-air. Children need to remain seated and secure during the ride, and parents should follow the attendants' instructions regarding how younger children should ride. A child who dislikes heights or becomes restless when sitting still may be more comfortable skipping the chairlift.

Sunshine Meadows itself can also be enjoyable for children who like walking outdoors. However, distances can feel much longer to little legs, and the high elevation may make children tire sooner than expected. Families don't need to complete the entire trail network to enjoy the scenery.

Bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, water, snacks, a hat, and sturdy footwear. Weather can change quickly, and temperatures around the meadows and Standish Mountain can be considerably cooler than in Banff.

For families with young children, the best approach is usually to keep the day flexible. Ride the gondola, see how everyone is feeling at Sunshine Village, and then decide whether to take the Standish Chairlift or explore some of the nearby trails.
