Is it colder at the top?

Yes. It is generally colder at the top of the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola than at the base. The upper mountain is at a significantly higher elevation, and temperatures typically decrease as you climb.

Even during July and August, the upper slopes of Whitehorn Mountain can feel cool, especially when there is wind or cloud cover. A warm, sunny afternoon may be comfortable in a T-shirt, while the same location can feel surprisingly chilly once the sun disappears behind the clouds.

Wind is often the biggest difference. The upper mountain is more exposed than the sheltered areas around the base, so even a relatively small temperature difference can feel much greater when the wind picks up. Visitors taking the open-air chairlift will notice this more than those travelling in the enclosed gondola.

Weather can also change rapidly. Sunshine can turn into cloud, rain, strong wind, or much cooler conditions within a relatively short period. Early mornings and late afternoons tend to feel colder than the middle of the day.

It's therefore a good idea to bring a sweater, fleece, or lightweight jacket, even if the weather feels warm when you arrive. A windproof or waterproof outer layer is particularly useful when the forecast is unsettled.

You don't necessarily need heavy winter clothing during a normal summer visit, but bringing one extra warm layer is one of the smartest things you can do. It's much easier to remove a jacket if you're warm than to spend your gondola ride and upper-mountain visit wishing you had brought one.
