Is it better than the Banff Gondola?

It can be. Sunshine Village and the Banff Gondola offer very different experiences, so which is better depends on what you want from your day.

If your priority is natural scenery and hiking, I would choose Sunshine Village. The combination of the enclosed gondola, open-air Standish Chairlift, Standish Viewing Deck, Sunshine Meadows, and Rock Isle, Grizzly, and Laryx lakes gives you much more terrain to explore. It feels like a high-alpine mountain outing rather than simply a trip to a summit attraction.

The Banff Gondola is better for effortless sightseeing. Once you reach Sulphur Mountain, you have observation decks, indoor exhibits, restaurants, the boardwalk to Sanson's Peak, and spectacular views over Banff, the Bow Valley, Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain, and surrounding ranges. You can see a great deal without doing much hiking.

Sunshine is particularly impressive in late July and early August, when the alpine meadows are green and wildflowers are blooming. September can be equally beautiful during larch season. The ability to walk among alpine lakes and meadows gives Sunshine much more variety for photographers and hikers.

The Banff Gondola has the advantage for year-round accessibility, restaurants, indoor attractions, evening experiences, bad-weather alternatives, and visitors who don't want to hike. It is also much closer to the Banff townsite.

For crowds, Sunshine often feels quieter and more spacious because visitors spread across the trail network. The Banff Gondola concentrates people around the summit building and boardwalk.

If you have time, they are different enough that doing both is worthwhile. But if I were choosing only one during a beautiful summer day, I would pick Sunshine Village for hiking and alpine scenery and the Banff Gondola for convenient sightseeing and panoramic views over Banff.
