How long is the walk to Rock Isle Lake?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

How long is the walk to Rock Isle Lake?

The walk to Rock Isle Lake is relatively short and manageable, especially compared with many hikes in Banff National Park.

From Sunshine Village, the traditional Sunshine Meadows route is about 1.8 km to Rock Isle Lake, with roughly 105 metres of elevation gain. Allow approximately one hour round trip for the basic Rock Isle Lake outing, although you'll probably want additional time for photographs and enjoying the viewpoints.

If you first ride the Standish Chairlift, you can approach Rock Isle Lake from above. This is an especially attractive option because you can visit the Standish Viewing Deck first and then descend through Sunshine Meadows toward Rock Isle Lake, eventually continuing back toward Sunshine Village.

The trail is generally easy to moderate rather than strenuous, but it is still a mountain trail. Expect gravel, rocks, uneven surfaces, some steps, and elevation changes. The high altitude can also make the walk feel slightly more tiring than the distance suggests.

For a first-time visitor, I would allow around 1½ to 2 hours for Standish Viewing Deck, the walk toward Rock Isle Lake, and a relaxed return to Sunshine Village. Add more time if you want to continue around Grizzly Lake and Laryx Lake. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
