How difficult are the hikes?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

How difficult are the hikes?

Most hikes in Sunshine Meadows are easy to moderate, particularly compared with many Banff National Park hikes. Because the gondola and Standish Chairlift take you high into the mountains, you can experience alpine scenery without completing a long, steep climb from the valley.

The Standish Viewing Deck is the easiest option. From the top of the Standish Chairlift, it requires only a short walk and is suitable for most visitors who are comfortable walking on mountain paths. It's more of a scenic stroll than a traditional hike.

The route from Standish down toward Rock Isle Lake and Sunshine Village is also relatively approachable. Much of the route is downhill or gently rolling, although there are uneven surfaces, rocks, and some steeper sections. It's a good choice for casual hikers who want more than just the viewing deck.

The Rock Isle Lake, Grizzly Lake, and Laryx Lake trails are generally moderate. They involve more distance, rolling terrain, and some elevation changes, but they don't require technical hiking or scrambling. A reasonable level of fitness and comfortable footwear are usually sufficient.

The biggest challenge is often the high elevation rather than the trail itself. Sunshine Meadows sits above 2,000 metres, so you may become tired or short of breath more quickly than you would on a similar walk at lower elevations. Weather can also change rapidly.

Overall, Sunshine Meadows is particularly good for beginners and recreational hikers because you can choose your distance. You can spend less than an hour around Standish or turn the visit into a several-hour hike through the lakes and meadows without needing to tackle an exceptionally difficult mountain trail.
