Does the gondola operate in bad weather?

The Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola can operate in less-than-perfect weather, but operations depend on conditions. Light rain, cool temperatures, overcast skies, and ordinary mountain weather generally do not automatically prevent the gondola from running.

The main concern is severe or unsafe weather. Strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning, or other adverse conditions can cause the gondola to be temporarily suspended or closed. Mountain weather around Whitehorn Mountain can change quickly, so conditions may also improve enough for operations to resume later in the day.

Even when the gondola remains open, poor weather can significantly affect the experience. Low clouds, fog, or heavy rain can hide Lake Louise, Victoria Glacier, and surrounding peaks, reducing the panoramic views that are one of the main reasons to take the ride.

If conditions are simply cloudy or showery, the trip can still be worthwhile. The enclosed gondola provides protection during the ride, and breaks in the clouds can produce dramatic mountain scenery. Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers, and sturdy footwear, because the upper mountain is typically cooler and more exposed than the base.
