Do I need hiking boots?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Do I need hiking boots?

No, hiking boots are not required for a typical sightseeing visit to Sunshine Village and Sunshine Meadows. If you are mainly riding the gondola and Standish Chairlift, visiting the viewpoints, and walking shorter maintained trails, a good pair of comfortable walking shoes or trail shoes is usually enough.

However, hiking boots are a better choice if you plan to explore longer sections of the Sunshine Meadows trail network. Trails can include uneven rocks, roots, loose gravel, muddy sections, and wet ground, particularly after rain. Boots with good traction and ankle support can make longer walks more comfortable.

Avoid sandals, flip-flops, smooth-soled casual shoes, or dress shoes if you intend to hike. Mountain weather can change quickly, and trails that are dry in the morning can become slippery after a shower.

For most visitors, sturdy trail-running shoes or hiking shoes with good grip are the best compromise. Full hiking boots are most useful for longer hikes, wet conditions, or anyone who prefers additional ankle support. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
