Can you visit in spring?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Can you visit in spring?

Yes, you can visit Sunshine Village in spring, but the experience is very different from a summer visit to Sunshine Meadows.

During March, April, and much of May, Sunshine Village is still primarily operating as a ski and snowboard resort. Because of its high elevation, the area typically remains snow-covered long after spring conditions have arrived in Banff.

The summer sightseeing gondola, Standish Chairlift sightseeing experience, and Sunshine Meadows hiking trails are not generally available during the spring hiking season. The meadows remain buried under snow, and the trails need time to melt and dry before summer hiking begins.

Late May and June are transitional. Snowmelt gradually exposes the lower terrain, but Sunshine Meadows can retain substantial snow into early summer. Mud, lingering snowpack, and wet trail conditions can delay hiking access.

If your goal is skiing and snowy mountain scenery, spring can be an excellent time to visit Sunshine. If your goal is Rock Isle Lake, wildflowers, hiking Sunshine Meadows, and riding the Standish Chairlift for sightseeing, summer is the better choice.

For the classic Sunshine Meadows experience, plan for July through September, with July and August offering the most reliable combination of accessible trails, summer scenery, and sightseeing lift operations. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
