Can you see mountain goats?

Yes, mountain goats are possible around the broader Sunshine Village mountain environment, but they are not something you should expect to see during a typical Sunshine Meadows visit.

Mountain goats prefer steep, rocky terrain, cliffs, ledges, and high mountain slopes. Much of the main Sunshine Meadows trail system passes through gentler alpine meadow terrain, so goats may be visible only at a considerable distance on surrounding mountains.

If you are hoping to spot them, binoculars are very useful. Scan exposed rocky slopes and ridgelines around the Continental Divide rather than concentrating only on the meadows beside the trails.

Sightings are unpredictable. You are much more likely to encounter marmots, ground squirrels, pikas, and alpine birds around the main hiking areas than mountain goats.

If you do see a mountain goat, enjoy it from a distance and never approach or attempt to feed it. Despite their calm appearance, mountain goats are powerful wild animals and need plenty of space.
