Can you see deer?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Can you see deer?

Yes. Deer can occasionally be seen around the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola and Whitehorn Mountain, although they aren't usually the main wildlife attraction.

Mule deer are the more likely species to encounter in the surrounding mountain environment. They may appear around forest edges, open clearings, grassy slopes, or quieter areas near the lower mountain. White-tailed deer are also found in the broader region, but sightings around the gondola are less predictable.

From the gondola or open chairlift, watch the open slopes and boundaries between forest and meadow. Deer can blend into the vegetation remarkably well, so binoculars are useful even when animals aren't very far away.

Sightings are never guaranteed. Deer move freely throughout the surrounding habitat and may spend much of the day concealed in the forest. Early morning and later afternoon can sometimes provide better opportunities than the busiest middle portion of the day.

If you're hiking and encounter a deer, give it plenty of room rather than approaching for photographs. Overall, deer are certainly possible to see at Whitehorn Mountain, but bears - particularly the possibility of seeing a wild grizzly - are what make the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola especially noteworthy for wildlife viewing.
