Can beginners hike Sunshine Meadows?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Can beginners hike Sunshine Meadows?

Yes. Sunshine Meadows is one of the better high-alpine hiking areas around Banff for beginners. The sightseeing gondola carries you from the valley to Sunshine Village, and the Standish Chairlift can take you even higher, eliminating much of the strenuous elevation gain normally required to reach alpine terrain.

Beginners can start with the Standish Viewing Deck, which requires only a short walk from the top of the chairlift. From there, you get impressive views over Sunshine Meadows and the surrounding mountains without committing to a long hike.

For a little more adventure, beginners can hike from Standish toward Rock Isle Lake and back to Sunshine Village. This lets you begin at a higher elevation and generally work your way downhill through the meadows. You can then decide whether to continue toward Grizzly Lake and Laryx Lake depending on your energy and the weather.

The trails themselves are non-technical, so you don't need scrambling or mountaineering experience. However, expect natural mountain surfaces, including rocks, gravel, roots, slopes, and potentially muddy sections. Good running shoes with traction, trail shoes, or hiking shoes are recommended.

The main challenge for beginners is the elevation. Sunshine Meadows is above 2,000 metres, so you may tire or become short of breath more quickly than expected. Walk at a comfortable pace, carry water, and don't feel that you need to complete the entire trail network.

For a first mountain hike, Sunshine Meadows offers an excellent combination of accessible trails, spectacular scenery, alpine lakes, wildflowers, and flexible distances. You can have a rewarding experience without being an experienced hiker. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
