Can I wear running shoes?

Yes. Running shoes are generally fine for a casual visit to Sunshine Village and Sunshine Meadows, especially if you are riding the sightseeing gondola and Standish Chairlift, visiting the viewing areas, and doing only shorter walks.

For hiking, trail-running shoes are better than ordinary road-running shoes because they provide more grip on loose gravel, rocks, dirt, and potentially muddy sections. Regular running shoes can still work in dry conditions on easier maintained trails, but smooth or worn soles may become slippery.

If you plan to spend several hours exploring Sunshine Meadows, hike farther from the main sightseeing areas, or visit after rain, hiking shoes or lightweight hiking boots are the safer and more comfortable choice.

For an average summer sightseeing day, though, you do not need to buy hiking boots just for Sunshine Village.
