Can I walk without hiking gear?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Can I walk without hiking gear?

Yes. You can enjoy the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola's upper mountain without specialized hiking gear, particularly if you're only planning to explore the developed sightseeing areas or take a short walk.

For casual walking, you don't need hiking boots, trekking poles, a large backpack, or technical clothing. A pair of comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes with decent traction is usually sufficient. Running shoes can work well when conditions are dry.

If you're planning to take one of the longer or steeper trails, proper hiking footwear becomes more worthwhile. Trails can have loose gravel, rocks, roots, mud, and uneven sections, and conditions can become slippery after rain.

Even for a short walk, bring a light jacket or warm layer. Whitehorn Mountain can be noticeably cooler and windier than the base, and mountain weather can change quickly. Water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are also useful.

You should also remember that this is active wildlife country. Pay attention to posted trail notices and closures, stay on designated routes, and follow any instructions regarding bears.

So, if your plan is simply to ride the gondola, walk around the upper mountain, enjoy the viewpoints, take photographs, and perhaps have something to eat, ordinary comfortable outdoor clothing and good walking shoes are generally all you need. Specialized hiking equipment is mainly worthwhile if you intend to venture farther onto the mountain trails. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
