Can I choose between an enclosed gondola and an open chairlift?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Can I choose between an enclosed gondola and an open chairlift?

Yes. One of the distinctive features of the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing experience is that visitors can normally choose between an enclosed gondola and an open-air chairlift, when both are operating.

The enclosed gondola is the more comfortable choice on cool, windy, or rainy days. It provides protection from the weather and can also be preferable for families, visitors who are uncomfortable with heights, or anyone who wants a more sheltered ride.

The open-air chairlift provides a completely different experience. You're exposed to the mountain air with unobstructed views of the slopes, Bow Valley, surrounding peaks, and wildlife habitat. It can be especially enjoyable for photography and wildlife spotting because there are no gondola windows between you and the landscape.

Many visitors choose the open chairlift going up and the enclosed gondola coming down, or vice versa, so they can experience both types of lift during the same visit.

The choice is subject to daily lift operations and weather conditions. The open chairlift in particular may not always be available, so you should not assume that both options will be running on every visit.

If the weather is good and you're comfortable with heights, the open chairlift is arguably the more memorable ride. If comfort, protection from the weather, or a greater sense of security matters more, choose the enclosed gondola. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
