Banff National Park Wildlife

Are wildlife experts available?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Are wildlife experts available?

Yes. Wildlife interpreters and knowledgeable staff are available at the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola, particularly around the Wildlife Interpretive Centre on Whitehorn Mountain.

These interpreters help visitors understand the animals and ecosystems of Banff National Park. They can answer questions about grizzly bears, black bears and other Rocky Mountain wildlife, as well as explain animal behaviour, habitat, conservation and the importance of the Whitehorn Mountain wildlife corridor.

They are particularly helpful when it comes to bear identification. If you've spotted a bear from the gondola, an interpreter may be able to explain the differences between grizzly and black bears, what the animal was likely doing, and how bears use different parts of the mountain throughout the season.

The interpretive experience isn't limited to answering questions. The Wildlife Interpretive Centre contains interactive exhibits, life-sized wildlife displays and educational information about the ecology of the Canadian Rockies. The resort also offers a complimentary interpretive program as part of its summer experience.

For families, talking with an interpreter can be one of the most interesting parts of the visit. Children can ask questions about tracks, food, habitats and how animals survive in the mountains, making the experience much more interactive than simply looking at displays.

If wildlife viewing is one of your main reasons for visiting, spending some time with the interpretive team can add considerably to the experience. They can help you understand what you're seeing on Whitehorn Mountain rather than simply identifying an animal from a distance.
