Are black bears common?

Black bears live in the broader Sunshine Village area, but they are not something you should expect to see commonly while walking through Sunshine Meadows. The high-alpine meadows are generally less typical black-bear habitat than the lower forested slopes.

Black bears are more likely to occur at lower elevations and in forested areas, particularly where natural foods such as berries and vegetation are abundant. You could potentially see one while travelling to or from Sunshine Village, but sightings are unpredictable.

Interestingly, grizzly bears are an important consideration in the Sunshine backcountry as well, so hikers should follow bear-safety practices regardless of which species they expect to encounter.

If you are hiking, carry bear spray where you can reach it quickly, make your presence known on quieter trails, keep food secured, keep children close, and never approach a bear for photographs.

So while seeing a black bear is certainly possible, don't visit Sunshine Meadows expecting a bear sighting. Marmots, ground squirrels, pikas, and alpine birds are generally much more realistic wildlife to watch for. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
