Are black bears common?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Are black bears common?

Black bears are present around Lake Louise and Whitehorn Mountain, but I wouldn't describe them as common sightings from the Lake Louise Summer Sightseeing Gondola. They can certainly be seen, but the area is particularly notable for its grizzly bear habitat.

Black bears generally favour forested areas, forest edges, clearings, and lower-elevation slopes. During summer they move widely while feeding on grasses, berries, insects, and other seasonal foods. Occasionally, one may emerge onto an open ski run or mountainside where it can be spotted from the gondola or chairlift.

It is also easy to mistake a black bear for a grizzly based solely on colour. Black bears aren't always black; they can be brown, cinnamon, or occasionally quite light. Grizzlies can also range considerably in colour. Body shape, shoulder hump, facial profile, and ears are better identification features.

If wildlife viewing is important to you, bring binoculars and scan the edges of the forest as well as the open slopes beneath the lift. Bears can be surprisingly difficult to notice when they're partially concealed by vegetation.

As with grizzlies, there is no guarantee of seeing a black bear. Whitehorn Mountain is natural habitat, and the animals aren't fed, contained, or encouraged to remain near the sightseeing lift.

If you do encounter a black bear while hiking, give it plenty of space and follow all posted wildlife instructions. Never approach a bear for photographs or attempt to attract its attention. The opportunity to see bears here is special precisely because you're observing genuinely wild animals in their natural Rocky Mountain habitat.
